Summer HR Interns at San Jose Bike Clinic

This summer, under the expert guidance of our staff coordinator Jacob Tabares, San Jose Bike Clinic was fortunate to have not just one, but two summer HR interns. Jennie and Nick helped us find volunteers and run the shop in a way that led to our most successful summer ever. We would like to extend a huge thank you to Jacob, Jennie and Nick for all of their help this past summer. Below are two guest posts written by Jennie and Nick, detailing their experiences as HR interns at San Jose Bike Clinic.

Jennie

As someone who just realized that they wanted to try pursuing HR in second semester of freshman year, I knew that trying to find HR-related internships would be a bit tough, especially since I had never taken an HR-related class or had any concrete experience with HR. And it really was hard—I found myself reading and re-reading long job descriptions and complicated skill requirements, wondering if I should even attempt to apply to the positions. In this way, I’m quite thankful to San Jose Bike Clinic for providing me the opportunity to explore aspects of HR, while also giving me the freedom to take on different tasks and have a say in my own internship experience.

From the get-go, I was able to help screen applicants applying for the additional HR and Marketing positions. It was eye-opening to see how accomplished these applicants of all ages were, and was definitely challenging to sift through each application and consider how their skillset could help SJBC. I was also able to conduct my first ever job-related phone interview, which was another learning experience, and I found it quite similar to the journalism phone interviews I did during high school. That was another realization I had—seeing how beneficial my past experiences and skills were and how they related with new experiences.

Along with Jacob, the internship coordinator, and Nick, the other HR intern, I helped write and post new HR/Marketing job postings and voicemail/interview scripts. In addition, I was able to attend monthly meetings with SJBC’s Steering Committee, which gave me a glimpse into the inner workings of a volunteer-run nonprofit. I was able to communicate suggestions about the SJBC website to Dan, and now we have a working Google Form for prospective volunteers to fill out! I also helped write a blurb for SJBC to be included in the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition newsletter, and an HR internship guide for future interns. Overall, it’s extremely rewarding to see your suggestions be seriously considered and implemented.

I’m glad I was able to work alongside such hardworking, encouraging people this summer, and look forward to the ideas that future interns have for SJBC. I can’t wait to see how the internship program develops and evolves beyond its first year!

“I have really fond memories of bikes—from my first bicycle with training wheels and pink tassels to biking through the Shoreline Park trails and Saratoga with my dad and brother.”

Jennie is an innovative person who enjoys helping people, being creative, and riding bicycles! A California native, Jennie currently studies human resources at Boston University.

Nick

This summer I worked as an HR intern at the San Jose Bike Clinic. I was a little bit concerned because I had no knowledge of the organization. The only knowledge I possessed of the organization was that they focused on bikes. Upon first having a Facebook messenger meeting with my boss, I knew that I would enjoy the work I was about to start. We had objectives that we needed to complete and there were multiple ways to complete these objectives.

For example, one objective was to attract volunteers so we decided to go talk to our parent company Silicon Valley Bike Coalition. We talked and decided the best approach would be to use Volunteer Match to find our new volunteers. Another assignment I did was to go to meetings and listen to how the company is organized. I remember the first meeting I attended was with Dan, Steve and a few other people, and I felt welcomed at the meeting. I also worked at the Bike Clinic and enjoyed learning more about bikes and helping people.

“One of my best experiences with bikes is riding with my family on the Los Gatos Creek Trail.”

Nick was born and raised in San Jose. He is soon to graduate from SJSU with a degree in human resource management. He currently works at a local Sprouts market where he enjoys the business facets of customer service and educating people about the “healthy living for life” philosophy and products.

Volunteers repairing a bike at San Jose Bike Clinic

Some of the first volunteers to wrench on a bike in our new space.

Our volunteers will be continuing to build out the shop and work out the kinks, so we thank you for your patience and understanding during this soft launch period.

We also invite you to pitch in and join the team. Just email sjbc@bikesiliconvalley.org or attend one of our workdays on Tuesdays from 7-8:30 pm if you’d like to help.

Got Two Hours? SJBC Needs You

As always, we’re staffed by volunteers, each day made up of two 2-hour shifts: 4:30 to 6:30 and 6:30 to 8:30. We’re filling out our schedule over the coming weeks to the point where every shift has at least two volunteers.

If you’d like to join the team, please sign up for shop shifts in this form.

Whether you have bike repair skills or not, we’d be grateful to have a couple of hours of your time whenever you can spare it.

Tasks may include:

  • Teaching members/customers how to do repairs
  • Fixing donated bikes so we can sell them to generate revenue
  • Administrative tasks at the front desk
  • Building out/cleaning up the shop
  • Organizing spare parts
  • Triage of donated bikes and parts

Imagine next Bike to Work Day

As we approach Bike to Work Day on May 14, and near 85% of our Crowdfunding goal in just our second week, imagine how a shared community bike workshop in downtown San Jose could get even more people on two wheels next year.

Imagine hundreds of commuters of all walks of life pulling their bikes out of the garage after collecting dust due to a flat tire. Imagine them coming into Bike Clinic to learn how to get their bikes into road-ready condition and safe to ride. Imagine them borrowing tools and taking classes. This knowledge can overcome obstacles so people can make a change in how they commute to work and travel through the city.

Our stretch goal, as soon as our awesome supporters help us reach $4,000, is another $800 to buy a sturdy stand, wrenches, and all the other basic tools to equip our first workstation.

Make sure we have that first complete workstation ready when you come to the shop! Give today at http://igg.me/at/fundSJBC, email this message to 10 bike-loving friends, and share the link on social media with #fundSJBC.

Imagine the satisfaction of people fixing their own bike, leaving with the know-how to tackle any problem their bikes could throw at them on Bike to Work Day or any day. We believe every day should be Bike to Work Day, and our goal is to provide a place where the people can learn about bicycle maintenance, fix their own bikes, and make some friends along the way.

If you share this vision, help San Jose Bike Clinic get more bikes on the road by supporting us at http://igg.me/at/fundSJBC. Thank you to all of our amazing supporters and the San Jose cycling community for getting us this far!

All donations go towards making a permanent space for your volunteer-run Bike Clinic in downtown a reality.

We are 83% of the way to our goal and we have a little less than two weeks left in our campaign. There is no better time to contribute to bringing a thriving bike community together through bike repair education.

Crowdfunding Launch

We Launch Today!

Today we launch SJBC’s crowdfunding campaign. Help make your community bike shop a reality by giving on our Indiegogo page: http://igg.me/at/fundSJBC

Imagine a space sustained by volunteer energy, filled with all the bike repair tools and parts you’d need and staffed by knowledgeable volunteer bike mechanics. Imagine the satisfaction of anyone who wants to learn having the knowledge to fix their bike themselves.

That’s our vision, and our goal is to raise $4,000 dollars to establish a permanent space in downtown San José! Donations are tax deductible and we are also including perks based on the amount you decide to contribute.

Please forward this email to anyone who you think would share our vision–people who bike commute locally or around the world, those who believe San José needs this to build a diverse and robust cycling community, anyone who would enjoy coming in and wrenching on their bikes in this shared space.

You can also share our tweets (@SJBikeClinic) and Facebook posts to help spread the word.

SJBC appreciates your support and we’re looking forward to a very successful campaign with your help. Make sure to spread the word: forward this email to friends, share the Indiegogo link to social media and help us get the word out about making the dream of a community bike shop in downtown San Jose a reality

Sincerely,

The Bike Clinic Crew

February Skill Share at San Pedro Square Market

As the San Jose Pop-Up Project has come to an end, San Jose Bike Clinic has moved out of our space at Camera 12. We thank Camera 12 and the San Jose Downtown Association for the opportunity. We’d also like to thank all our volunteers for spending their time helping run the shop, and all of the cyclists who came by to buy bikes and parts and make use of the shop space. We’re excited for our next chapter!

Now that we are back to mobile status, San Pedro Square Market has graciously invited us back to continue doing our monthly Skill Shares on the Third Thursday of the month. We are starting again this month of February. Here are the event details:
